The America Reads program is designed to help students at Central Elementary School develop better reading skills. Students are identified by classroom teachers as those who lack specific reading skills or those whose developmental delay prevent them from keeping pace with their peers. After the classroom teacher has identified the students requiring assistance and laying out the plan for remediation, the university intern works with the student(s) in a one-on-one setting.

DUTIES:

The specific duties of the intern can vary from work with individual students in the classroom to working with the aftercare program. Duties have also included planning and creating learning activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

In choosing students to serve as interns in this program, candidates must first be eligible for federal student aid. Students must have attained the minimum of sophomore status. Preference is given to students who have an expressed interest in pursuing teaching as a career. Students with one or more courses in methods of teaching reading have an advantage of being chosen for the program.

SCHEDULE:

Schedules for work in the schools are negotiated between the interns and the classroom teachers. Consideration is given to the interns' university course schedules and the classroom teachers' schedule. Normally, the intern will visit the school two or more times a week for a period varying from two and three hours each visit.
